A Day in My Life Using Digital Media

For as long as I can remember, digital media has always been a part of my daily life. Digital media is how I get my daily news, stay in contact with friends and family, get my school assignments and work on my own creative projects. While being constantly connected to multiple digital media can be annoying at times, I genuinely cannot imagine a life without it. Digital media shapes how I start my day, stay connected and consume marketing.

Morning Routine

I typically start my mornings by checking to see if I have any missed calls or messages from friends or family. I like to start my mornings with as little digital media as possible, so I have a Do Not Disturb on my phone until 7:30 am. After I finish my morning routine, I will check Instagram for any direct messages or comments I may have received. I often get sucked into watching a few Reels before I have to put my phone down, or I will continue to scroll. While looking at Reels can be entertaining and informative, if I continue to scroll, it will throw off my morning routine. From here, I will either listen to a True Crime video on Youtube, some music or audiobook on Spotify as I get ready for my day. Most of my interactions on social media are typically positive, but there are instances where I will come across a negative comment, video or story. For these reasons, I like to limit my digital media use in the mornings and have my mornings mostly to my own thoughts or interests, such as music, or audiobooks.

Afternoon Routine

Most afternoons start with me checking for any class assignments I need to complete. I spend an hour at lunch each day either reading online articles, watching videos for class or completing assignments. From there, I will check Instagram or Tik Tok throughout the day for entertainment purposes, as well as sending funny videos to friends and family. I will continue to use Snap Chat throughout the afternoon to stay connected with friends. I often find myself scrolling on Instagram or TikTok out of habit, and I notice that I lose a lot of my free time to this. I would consider this a negative impact of digital media because the time I waste scrolling online, I could spend it working towards my own hobbies or goals.

Evening Routine

Most evenings start with me working online with class assignments, and taking periodic scrolling breaks on Instagram or TikTok (although this is something I’m working on limiting in 2026). I will often end the evening by watching a TV show or movie on Netflix or HBO Max or watching the evening news.

Use of Marketing in Digital Media Today

One thing I have noticed about marketing in digital media today is how highly personalized content on social media platforms has become. Apps like Instagram and TikTok track user preferences and engagement in order to curate content that closely aligns with individual interests. For example, if I engage with a video about the Phantom of the Opera, the next few videos I scroll past will all be about the Phantom of the Opera. While this personalization can be entertaining and engaging, I also find it somewhat addictive, as I am more likely to continue scrolling when the content is specifically tailored to my interests.

Conclusion

Overall, digital media plays a large role in shaping my daily routines, from how I start my mornings to how I unwind at night. While it offers convenience, connection, and entertainment, I am also aware of its potential to be distracting and time-consuming. Recognizing both the positive and negative impacts of digital media has encouraged me to be more intentional about how and when I use it. Moving forward, I hope to maintain a healthier balance that allows digital media to support my goals rather than distract from them.
